Auto Insurance for Southern Indiana Drivers

Auto insurance is required to drive in Indiana, but the state minimum is a starting point, not a recommendation. At Innovators Insurance Group, we compare auto policies from multiple carriers and help you choose limits that actually protect what you have.

Indiana’s minimums, and why most drivers carry more

Indiana requires at least 25/50/25 in liability coverage: $25,000 for injuries to one person, $50,000 for injuries per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Medical bills and the cost of today’s vehicles can blow past those limits in a single accident, and anything above your limit can come back to you. We will show you what higher limits cost so you can decide.

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage
Risk Factor

It’s easy to get distracted while driving. All it takes is an incoming text message, a fussy baby, or changing the radio station and your eyes are off the road long enough to crash into the slowing vehicle in front of you. As an owner/operator of the vehicle, you may be held financially responsible for any bodily injuries caused as a result of the accident.

Solution

Bodily injury liability covers your legal liability for a covered accident that involves injury to another person, up to the limit of liability you select. Purchase enough coverage to protect your assets should a claim be brought against you or if you are sued. You should also consider purchasing an excess liability policy which may provide additional limits of liability.

Property Damage Coverage
Risk Factor

When involved in an auto accident, you and your family may be financially responsible for any damage caused by your vehicle to someone else's property. The amount required, if any, can vary by state.

Solution

The property damage portion of your auto insurance policy protects you if your car damages someone else's property, such as another car, a fence, or a building. In some instances, you may be able to choose your coverage limit, or it may be a standard amount dictated by the insurer or local laws.

Medical Payments Coverage and Personal Injury Protection
Risk Factor

Depending on the severity of the injuries suffered in an automobile accident, whether caused by you or by the other vehicle, it's not uncommon for healthcare costs to run into the thousands of dollars, with a large portion being out-of-pocket expenses not covered by your health plan.

Solution

Medical payments coverage or Personal Injury Protection, depending on where you live, can help cover some medical expenses and funeral expenses of covered drivers and passengers after an accident. The exact requirements, limits, and coverage can vary by state, so it's important to understand what's required where you live.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Damage Coverage
Risk Factor

What happens when the driver who hit you doesn't have enough liability coverage? Or, even worse, they take off? Research has shown that this happens more than you might expect. If you’re in a collision with someone who is uninsured or underinsured, you can be left to pay out-of-pocket for damages and medical expenses not covered by the other driver.

Solution

Uninsured/underinsured motorist damage coverage may compensate you for bodily injury and lost wages caused by an uninsured motorist, a hit-and-run driver, a driver whose automobile insurance company is insolvent, or a driver who has not purchased enough coverage to pay for damages.

Physical Damage Coverage
Risk Factor

Your automobile can be a fairly costly investment – one that is exposed to many potential losses caused by weather related events, theft, and other circumstances that may be out of your control.

Solution

Physical damage coverage can protect your vehicle if it is damaged in an accident (collision coverage), is damaged by something other than a collision (comprehensive coverage) with a vehicle or object or if your vehicle is stolen. This coverage is optional if your vehicle is paid in full, but it is coverage you should consider if you want to fully protect your vehicle.

Rental Coverage / Loss of Use
Risk Factor

When your vehicle is being repaired or replaced due to a covered loss, you may have to rent a vehicle to get you to and from your daily responsibilities without any interruption. Vehicle rental can get expensive, especially over an extended period of time.

Solution

Rental coverage/ loss of use is an inexpensive option you can add to your auto insurance policy to pay for the cost to rent a temporary replacement vehicle or the cost of public or private transportation if your vehicle is ever in an accident. This coverage is available in a variety of daily limits.

Coverage we review with you

  • Liability limits that fit your assets and income.

  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Indiana insurers must offer it, and you have to reject it in writing to go without. We usually recommend keeping it.

  • Collision and comprehensive, with deductibles you can comfortably pay.

  • Medical payments, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance.

  • Rideshare and delivery driving. If you drive for an app, your personal policy may not cover you during parts of the trip. We can explain the gap and how to close it.

Ways to save without cutting protection

Bundling home and auto, safe-driver and good-student discounts, paying in full, and choosing the right deductible can all lower your premium. Because we are independent, we can compare how different carriers price your vehicles and drivers, which matters most when you add a teen driver or buy a new car.

We serve drivers in Charlestown, Jeffersonville, Sellersburg, Clarksville, New Albany, and across Southern Indiana, plus Louisville-area drivers in Kentucky.

What is the minimum car insurance required in Indiana?

Indiana’s minimum auto liability is 25/50/25: fce_id=”fce_6ae4fe654ae58″5,000 for one injured person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. One serious accident on I-65 can go well past those limits, and anything above them can come out of your pocket. Innovators Insurance Group will walk you through higher limit options and what each one protects, so you can decide what fits your family.

Do I need uninsured motorist coverage in Indiana?

Indiana doesn’t make you carry it, but your insurer must include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on your policy unless you sign a written rejection. It helps pay for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Before you decide, Innovators Insurance Group explains what each limit protects and what you’d give up by rejecting it, so you can choose whether to keep it, and at what level.

I live in Southern Indiana and commute to Louisville. Does that change my auto insurance?

It can. Your Indiana auto policy generally goes with you into Kentucky, but your daily mileage and where the car is parked overnight can affect your policy. Let Innovators Insurance Group know about your commute over the I-65 bridges or the Lewis and Clark Bridge, so your policy reflects how you actually drive and there are no surprises at claim time. We’re licensed in Indiana and Kentucky.

Does my personal auto policy cover me when I drive for Uber, Lyft or DoorDash?

Often not, or only in part. Most personal auto policies in Indiana exclude driving for pay, and app coverage changes depending on whether the app is on, you’re heading to a pickup, or you have a passenger or order. Innovators Insurance Group reviews your policy with you, shows you where a gap may be, and explains the options for closing it.

Can I keep strong car insurance coverage in Southern Indiana and still lower my premium?

Often, yes. Discounts for bundling home and auto, safe driving, good students and paying in full, plus a deductible you can comfortably pay, can all lower your premium without reducing your protection. Carriers also look at the same driver very differently, so Innovators Insurance Group compares coverage and options from several partner carriers for you. That matters most when you add a teen driver or buy a new car.
